We recently had a client that emailed over this response: My family has a dilemma we are trying to resolve and maybe someone here can help. My grandmother died several years ago and left quite a large library of American and other literature. She was a Ph.D in American literature and a Faulkner scholar. We are trying to figure out what to do with the hundreds of books–the problem is, she took extensive notes and did major underlining in almost all of the books, so it isn’t as easy as just donating them to a library or Goodwill. If she had been a more famous author, the books (and a substantial donation, I am sure), would have made a wing in a related library, but unfortunately, that’s not the case.

We would hate to have to throw them away, because they could be beneficial to someone, but I fear it would have to be a very specific use/application. Also, shipping would probably be prohibitive. Anyone have any ideas?

If the above scenario seems familiar, Please contact us today! We are Book Smart and knowledgeable. We can help you with selling your book collection left from loved ones.

Selling Your Estate Books: Frequently Asked Questions

How Do You Determine the Value of Old Books?

Determining the value of old books can be a little tricky since many factors contribute to a book’s value. The easiest way to understand the value of your collection is to get a free quote from us.

Start by evaluating the condition of your books. Are the pages worn? What’s the binding like? Does it have a dust jacket, and if so, what condition is it in?

Make a note of any distinguishing elements your books have. Does the book have an author’s signature? What edition is it? Who were the previous owners of the book?

Should I Sell My Old Books?

Sometimes you aren’t in love with a collection or don’t want to keep it. You may as well get some monetary compensation out of the collection by liquidating it.

If you don’t have enough space for the book collection, don’t use it, or have found yourself in a challenging financial situation, get cash for your books from Cash For Your Books!

How Do I Get My Old Books to You?

We’ll come to you to get them. We can even appraise the books on site for you. If you have an extensive collection, we’ll handle the packing and loading, so you don’t have to do it yourself. Selling us your books may be one of the easiest ways to eliminate your unwanted book collection.

What Kind of Old Books Can I Sell?

We’re most interested in large collections of 200 books or more, but we may consider smaller collections if they contain particularly valuable books.

What Condition Do My Old Books Need to Be In?

The better the condition, the better the value. Books with unfaded covers, clean pages, strong spines, and dust jackets in good condition are more valuable than books with ripped or dog-eared pages, faded covers or print, stains, broken spines, or damaged or missing dust jackets.

That being said, your books don’t have to be in perfect condition to sell. Just be aware that the condition will impact the price you’re able to get for the books.
